Euro 2008 Qualification Preview: Group G
The final installment of the Euro 2008 preview is upon us. In it is a group with one clear favorite and a bunch of possibilities for second spot.
The Fodder: Albania and Luxembourg. There’s a reason they were the opposing nation in ‘Wag the Dog.’ If there was anyone San Marino could beat in Europe it would probably be Luxembourg.
Will Walk This Group: The Netherlands. This group is so easy Marco van Basten has taken it upon himself to force Ruud van Nistelrooy and Mark van Bommel out of the Dutch squad indefinitely.
The Battle for Second: Belarus has a playmaker in Aliaksandr Hleb. Bulgaria has a tremendous amount of talent in midfield and defense, but the defending is suspect. Romania has a more even spread of talent, which could see them through. Slovenia has the potential to surprise everyone in this group.
Group Prediction:
Netherlands
Bulgaria
Romania
Belarus
Slovenia
Albania
Luxembourg

Five for Fighting
In the depths of the Coca-Cola Football League One, very rarely do matches get national attention. However, thanks to Sky Sports decision to air the Northampton v Bristol City fixture last night, viewers were treated to a very interesting surprise.
Bristol City’s Bradley Orr simulated a headbutt on Louis Carey, who plays for Bristol City. Oh dear. Thankfully, someone got highlights up on YouTube (around the :50 mark). Read the rest of this entry »
Euro 2008 Qualification Preview: Group F
Its the penultimate group with plenty of minnows for Spain to rack up a huge goal difference.
The Fodder: Liechtenstein is a country you can drive lengthwise in just 15 minutes. Northern Ireland couldn’t draw England this time for an easy 3 points at home. Iceland has Eidur Gudjohnsen and uh, a bunch of other guys. Latvia qualified for Euro 2004, but come on.
Will Walk This Group: Spain are simply too good for the rest of this group. In fact the best Spanish players in the Segunda could probably qualify from this group.
The Battle for Second: Sweden qualified for the World Cup, but they will have to contend with a Denmark team that always seems to qualify for the championship they won in 1992.
Group Prediction:
Spain
Sweden
Denmark
Iceland
N. Ireland
Latvia
Liechtenstein

Euro 2008 Qualification Preview: Group E
When you delay it this long, you kind of forget that there has actually been a match played in this group. Just under two weeks ago, Goce Sedloski scored the only goal in a 1-0 win for Macedonia over Estonia. Unfortunately, this doesn’t really change anything for them.
The Fodder: Andorra has only one competitive win in its history, which was against Macedonia, but not enough to see them do anything in this group. Estonia is off to a poor start as they needed at least a point from their opening match at home. Macedonia are the best of the fodder sides, but any team who loses to Andorra has a lot to do to regain respect.
Will Walk This Group: England. Steve McClaren has a superior team to anyone in this group, and he should lose his job if they fail to qualify.
The Battle for Second: Croatia always seem to qualify for major tournaments, and they have a good team. Russia have the managerial might of Guus Hiddink, which should see them improve dramatically. Israel might be considered a bit of a surprise, but they went unbeaten in World Cup qualifying.
Group Prediction:
England
Russia
Croatia
Israel
Macedonia
Estonia
Andorra

Euro 2008 Qualification Preview: Group D
Well after a month, and the actual matches beginning soon, it was probably a good idea to continue this.
The Fodder: San Marino, Cyprus, Wales, Slovakia. San Marino have never won a competitive match, Cyprus is another nice vacation destination, Slovakia has not made an impact since independance and Wales are capping players in League Two.
Will Walk This Group: No one. The remaining three nations are close enough to make this a real battle for the two advancing spots.
The Top Two Battle: The Czech Republic looked pretty good at the World Cup against the United States only to crap the bed against Ghana and Italy. The same choking ability may see them miss out. Germany were semifinalists as hosts, but many feel they overachieved. They should still go through, however. The Republic of Ireland has looked excellent in their buildup friendlies and may pull off qualification.
Group Prediction:
Germany
Ireland
Czech Republic
Wales
Slovakia
Cyprus
San Marino
That Pesky Bank Holiday Match
The last match of the third round of the EPL campaign took place at the Riverside. Last time out, Boro came from 1-0 down to beat Chelsea 2-1. Surely Pompey would be an easier task. It was not to be. Kanu netted his third and fourth goals of the young campaign with Benjani and Svetoslav Todorov scoring the other two as Portsmouth romped 4-0. It was a record away win for Pompey, and with Jonathan Woodgate in attendance, Boro may have lost a potential signing.
In Spain, the champions opened their season with a thrilling 3-2 win at Celta Vigo. Fernando Baiano opened the scoring for the hosts in the first half before Samuel Eto’o and Lionel Messi put Barcelona in the lead. But that was short-lived as Gustavo Lopez pegged it back level. Santos Iriney was sent off for Celta three minutes from time before new signing Eidur Gudjohnsen volleyed Barca to victory a minute later.
Finally, the unofficial World Club Championship changed hands this weekend as Blas Ramon Lopez and Fabio Ramos carried Nacional to an historic (not really) victory over Libertad. The Tricolor defend their crown this Sunday against Sportivo Luqueño.
