This Weekend’s Compelling Matches

Posted in Football (soccer) at 4:47 am by deadlymusings

Saturday

Cerro Porteño v. Fernando de la Mora – Cerro defend the Unofficial World Club Championship (will be explained at some point) title in the second round of the Paraguayan Clausura.

Paraná Clube v. Cruzeiro – Round 13 of the Brazilian Championship sees Cruzeiro try to go top, albeit possibly temporarily, against high flying Paraná. Cruzeiro’s Wagner is currently second in the league with 8 goals scored.

Red Bull New York v. Kansas City Wizards – Sacked by the higher ups at US Soccer, Bruce Arena leads the Red Bulls into Kansas City. Kansas City looks to solidify a spot in the top 3 as to avoid a potential showdown with rampant DC United in the playoffs.

Lillestrom v. Newcastle United – This Third Round Intertoto Cup match shows all the signs of defining the Magpies’ season already. A disinterested Luque prevented complete embarrasment against a side in midseason form, but the prospect of a three week wait for competitive play may help Newcastle should they fall.

Sunday

Brøndby v. FC Nordsjælland – Brøndby begins its challenge for the Danish Championship after finishing 2nd to FC København last season. Nordsjælland will once again aspire to midtable mediocrity this season, so a point would be a bonus for them.

Luch-Energiya Vladivostok v. FK Rostov – Not a critical match in the Russian Premier League, but Rostov faces the daunting task of travelling to European football’s most distant outpost to play in an awful stadium miles from the Sea of Japan. Such is the uniqueness of Russian football.

AIK v. Halmstads – Its the summer when not much is going on, so this blah Swedish League game gets featured as well.
