That Pesky Bank Holiday Match

Posted in English Premier League, La Liga, South America at 10:41 pm by deadlymusings

The last match of the third round of the EPL campaign took place at the Riverside. Last time out, Boro came from 1-0 down to beat Chelsea 2-1. Surely Pompey would be an easier task. It was not to be. Kanu netted his third and fourth goals of the young campaign with Benjani and Svetoslav Todorov scoring the other two as Portsmouth romped 4-0. It was a record away win for Pompey, and with Jonathan Woodgate in attendance, Boro may have lost a potential signing.

In Spain, the champions opened their season with a thrilling 3-2 win at Celta Vigo. Fernando Baiano opened the scoring for the hosts in the first half before Samuel Eto’o and Lionel Messi put Barcelona in the lead. But that was short-lived as Gustavo Lopez pegged it back level. Santos Iriney was sent off for Celta three minutes from time before new signing Eidur Gudjohnsen volleyed Barca to victory a minute later.

Finally, the unofficial World Club Championship changed hands this weekend as Blas Ramon Lopez and Fabio Ramos carried Nacional to an historic (not really) victory over Libertad. The Tricolor defend their crown this Sunday against Sportivo Luqueño.
