The UEFA Cup Recap: September 14 (Part 1)

UEFA’s second tier competition began its First Round proper earlier tonight with 39, yes 39 matches. Here is a little bit about the first twenty matches of the night.

Daniele Dessena’s 79th minute effort was all that separated Parma and Rubin Kazan.

Antoine Sibierski scored his first for Newcastle United in their 1-0 win over Levadia Tallinn.
Odense scored two vital away goals in their draw at Hertha Berlin.

Slovan Liberec scored a 2-0 win over Red Star with goals by Tomas Frejlach and Jan Blazek.

Legia Warsaw and Austria Vienna battled to a 1-1 draw in Poland.

Dinamo Bucharest beat Xanthi 4-3 in a seven-goal thriller. Diego Jesus Quintana and Claudiu Iulian Niculescu each found the net twice.

Ethnikos Achnas and ten-man Lens played a 0-0 stalemate.

Hapoel Tel-Aviv beat Chornomorets on a Luciano De Bruno goal in Ukraine.

Lokomotiv Moscow gave up a late away goal to Zulte-Waregem in their 2-1 victory.

Start hung with Ajax for the first hour before the Dutch side scored the last three goals of the match in a 5-2 rout.

Besiktas scored two in the last ten minutes to beat ten man CSKA Sofia 2-0.

Artmedia and Espanyol played a well fought 2-2 draw.

Viorel Dinu Moldovan scored the only goal of the match a minute before halftime as Rapid Bucharest beat Portugese side Nacional.

Schalke scored a 1-0 win over Nancy with a goal by Soren Larsen.

Ten-man Osasuna conceded a late equalizer in a 2-2 draw with Trabzonspor.

Bojan Zajic found the net twice in Partizan Belgrade’s 4-2 win over Groningen.

Atvidaburg were handled easily at home by Grasshopper 3-0.

Derry City’s defense held as they played out a scoreless draw with Paris Saint Germain.

Braga beat nine-man Chievo 2-0.

Basel took a six goal lead at home before conceding two late against Rabotnicki.
