Whatever Happened to…Carsten Jancker?

Posted in Football (soccer) at 7:01 pm by deadlymusings

Carsten Jancker and his middle fingerHis shaved head was known to fans and opposing defenders alike when he terrorized clubs around Europe culminating in the 2001 Champions League title with Bayern Munich.

He may also be remembered as the German goalscorer in their infamous 5-1 defeat to England in a 2002 World Cup Qualifier.

A move to Serie A with Udinese seemed to end his career in 2002. Two seasons, 35 appearances, 2 goals are all he contributed for the bianconeri.

He returned to Germany with Kaiserslautern where he contributed the occasional goal, but was really a shadow of his former self. Following the club’s relegation last season, he left the club.

He then moved to China to play for one last paycheck with Shanghai Shenhua. He can still find the net in big games as he scored in last night’s 4-2 defeat to Jeonbuk Motors in the AFC Champions League.

Yet at 32, he may still move from their to some other club next season. Whether it is to the usual assumed retirement leagues like Qatar, the Australian A-League or MLS; or to a lower-league side back in Europe remains to be seen.
